Toyota Gets Its Start In 1957 with Toyopet

By Casey Williams
MyCarData

Toyota has been taking a beating in the press during the last couple of months. Some of it, painfully, is deserved. However, much of it is just piling on by people who don’t really understand what they’re talking about. Anybody who knows Toyota is sure the company will fix its issues quickly.

This is a company that began selling cars in the U.S. during 1957 with the Toyopet. By the end of 1958, Toyota had only sold 287 vehicles ? far less than the 2.5 million cars and trucks it would be selling annually by the end of the 2000s. The car was built on a heavy-duty truck frame that was perfect for Japan, but anchored the underpowered car, standard with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, with too much weight for American freeways. Toyota withdrew the Toyopet in 1960, leaving dealers with only the Tiara sedan and Land Cruiser SUV to sell.

In Japan, the company re-doubled its efforts to design and engineer a car for American tastes. In 1965, the Corona was introduced. It was followed by the Corolla, the best-selling nameplate of all time, in 1968. By 1975, Toyota was the best-selling import brand, displacing the lovable Volkswagen. The automaker surpassed 1 million vehicles per year in the U.S. during 1986. Three years later, Lexus was established and forever changed the domestic luxury market. In 1997, the Toyota Camry became the best-selling car in America, an honor it has maintained almost every year since.

Scion was launched in 2003 to introduce Gen-Y to a new generation of affordable Toyota compacts. At the other end of the range, Lexus introduced the 600h L, a long-wheelbase hybrid luxury sedan that was the brand’s first model to top $100,000. Toyota had clearly come a very long way in the previous half-century.

Toyota is not the first automaker to have momentary setbacks, and it won’t be the last. Audi had its own run-in with “unintended acceleration” that was eventually proven to be false. We don’t know what the whole story is yet, but we can be sure that Toyota will fix whatever it is and go on to many more decades of success in the U.S. We barely remember the Toyopet now. That says a lot about Toyota’s ability to overcome adversity and amaze us all.

Toyota Prius – Prius Power

2010 Toyota Prius

Despite all of the Prius’ supposed run-away dreams in California and elsewhere, the high-tech wonder from Japan continues its reign as the best-selling hybrid of all time; over 1.3 million have been sold. Ten years ago, it defined what a practical four-door high-efficiency car could be. Now in its third-generation, Prius still rides on top of the segment it created.

I drove two versions of that original model. It was a good car, but lived on the edge of what was acceptable on the freeway. It was also small and had a tiny trunk. The second-generation model was a dream in comparison ? and one of my favorite cars of all time. It kept the cool factor, but made a spot in the front row with a hatchback, fold-down seats, roomy interior, and peaceful controls. I averaged 42-MPG hauling self through the mountains of Tennessee at 80 mph. The latest edition is even more efficient, but has enough power to surprise some sport coupe drivers.

Toyota developed a more powerful 1.8-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine that mates with a continuously variable transmission and electric batteries/motor in the hybrid system. The gas engine produces 98 horsepower at 5,200 rpm, but when combined with the electric system, generates 134 horsepower ? about 24 HP more than the previous model. Toyota claims the mid-size sedan can zip from 0-60 mph in 9.8 seconds, and when driven more conservatively, achieve 51/48-MPG city/highway.

Power to the Prius! As a “full” hybrid, it can run on the gas engine alone, batteries alone, or use a combination of both for the ultimate efficiency. The car can creep short distances through traffic without burning fossils and is never plugged in. Batteries are recharged through the brakes and by using excess power from the engine. While the new Prius has three power modes ? EV, Eco, and Power ? it can only run as an EV for less than a mile, under 10mph. Eco mode causes the Prius to behave much like previous models, straining every ounce of energy from its drivetrain. When you’re feeling spunky, press the Power button to make the throttle more responsive and the Prius almost fun to drive.

To discover the Prius’ inner athlete, step on the gas, and put the Prius into a hard corner. The car is infinitely more fun to drive than the previous model. Optional 17″ wheels and low-profile tires look great and enhance the car’s cornering grip. Four-wheel disc brakes and electronic stability control also help. On the flip side, the bigger wheels and stiff suspension will shake the jiggles out of everything inside the Prius over rough roads. I might skip the upgrades and go for the standard wheels with more absorbent tires.

Beyond comparable fuel economy ratings are possible in part from the Prius’ famous shape. Designers updated the previous car’s styling by moving the roof peak back 3.9 inches, giving rear passengers more headroom. You might also notice the sharper corners, which part and unite the wind more effectively, lowering the car’s coefficient of drag from 0.26 to 0.25. LED headlamps and taillights use less energy and look great on the hyper-futuristic Prius. The car’s shape is almost as famous as the VW Beetle’s; Toyota designers were right not to mess with it much.

Slide inside and you’ll have no doubt that the Prius was designed for the next decade. It continues tradition with a center mounted digital speedometer below the windshield while adding a diagram to show in real time where power is coming and going. The dashboard flows down into a flying bridge panel that includes the audio, climate, and gear controls. There is plenty of space for large drinks, phones, etc. iPODs can be connected to the vehicle with an AUX jack in the console, but unfortunately a USB was not deemed necessary ? a BIG omission for a car this advanced. Lane keep assist (provides steering resistance to keep drivers from accidentally crossing lanes), Dynamic (radar) cruise control to maintain a set distance, heated leather seats, steering wheel buttons for audio/climate controls, JBL speakers, auto up/down windows, and voice controls for the navigation system are all available.

Over the course of the past ten years, Toyota completely re-thought and re-engineered the automobile. Many competitors have followed, and more are coming, but to most people, Prius = Hybrid. At the end of my first review ten years ago, I stated, “The Prius is no toy showcase. It IS a real car, and a very enjoyable one at that.” I couldn’t describe the newest one better than myself. With an as tested price of $32,720, competitors include the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Mercury Mariner Hybrid.

Toyota Recall – Government Motors exploits

Toyota announce one day a massive recall, the very next day General Motors is airing on television commercials exploiting the recall. Coincidental? Hmmmmm? Chrysler and General Motors are basically owned by the US government which is currently controlled by the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party and the Obama administrating beholding to the unions. The United Auto Workers union has Toyota in their cross-hairs because Toyota factories in the United States are not unionized. This contributes to two reasons the Democrats in Congress are exploiting the Toyota recall. Toyota is a Government Motors competitor, and to please the United Auto Workers union. This is nothing but exploitation by the Democrats and the UAW. Toyota’s President Akio Toyoda and Toyotas chief executive of North America Yoshimi Inaba have been called before Congress. This is an attempt to increase the sales of General Motors and Chrysler automobiles while hurting Toyota sales. According to the following website: auto-recalls.justia.com American made automobiles have more recall incidents than Toyota. Yet the Democrats are show-boating Toyota. It stinks. Toyota produces reliable automobiles and Japan and Toyota are owed an apology for this shameful attack upon their honor by the Obama Administration and the Democratic Party. Toyota 4 Runner – Runs on All Fours

2010 Toyota 4 Runner - Boulder,CO

2010 Toyota 4 Runner - Boulder,CO

Boulder, CO – The recent downturn in the economy and high fuel prices over the past couple or years have separated authentic SUVs from the pretenders and interlopers. Originally based on Toyota’s popular compact pickups, the 4Runner has always been the choice for off-road capability and on-highway comfort and style. With even some big name competitors leaving the roadways to car-based crossovers, the new 2010 4Runner stays true to its truck-based roots.

Completely new styling takes the best of the Tundra pickup, Land Cruiser, and previous-generation 4Runner, but turns it out in a wholly modern wrapper. The front is dominated by a scaled-down, but meaner-looking, version of the Tundra’s blunt nose. Accentuated wheel arches communicate the SUV’s toughness and off-road capability while chrome doorhandles and up to 20” alloy wheels paint with panache. 4Runner looks tough enough to tackle the Rubicon, but suave enough for an evening on the town.

Once inside, you may give a care about neither the Rubicon nor town. Passengers ride in a cabin that can best be described as industrial swank. The center control stack and gear selector are girded by silver finish and feel of towering strength. Fortunately, the dash also contains easy-to-use controls for the optional dual zone automatic climate control, navigation, and available 15-speaker JBL audio systems. Mirror-mounted rearview camera monitors are standard on Limited and Trail grades, optional on SR5. A Smart Key with keyless entry and push button starting is standard on the Limited.

Much attention was paid to seating. Three rows can be upholstered in leather (standard in water-resistant cloth). Front and second-row thrones recline – rears up to 16 degrees. Access to the third row is made easier by splitting the second row into a 40/20/40 with a one-touch walk-in switch. Protection is provided by eight standard airbags, including dual front, front side, front knee, and side curtains. In case one of these airbags deploys, Automatic Collision Notification automatically calls a response center to dispatch emergency services.

Powertrains come in two types: Frugal and Ferocious. Eco-minded drivers will choose the base DOHC 16-valve 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine that generates 157 horsepower and 178 lb.-ft. of torque. Attached to a four-speed automatic transmission, fuel economy is rated 18/23-MPG city/highway.

Those with something to prove, or a trailer to tow, will step up to the available 4.0-litre V6 that produces a hearty 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s 34 more ponies than the previous-generation and 10 more than the optional V8 that has been discontinued. Fuel economy for the V6 improved a couple of MPGs and is now rated 17/23-MPG for the 4×2 and 17/22-MPG for the 4×4.

Most owners will not choose the 4Runner for its luxuriously leather seats or frugal gas mileage. They could choose a Lexus RX350 for those and be completely content. Unless you’re the Swiss Army Knife type who wants ridiculous capability whether you need it or not, you’re likely to shop for a 4Runner because of what it can do for you.
4Runners can pull up to 5,000 lbs., ride on a full truck frame, and eat crossovers as granola. There’s more to help your adventures. The SUVs can be equipped with Toyota’s CRAWL Control, an adjustable system that contains the vehicle’s speed on rough terrain by one of five settings. It is also available with a Multi Terrain Select system that varies the amount of wheel slip permitted, depending on conditions. Downhill Assist Control (DAC) and Hill start assist lasso downhill runs and hold the vehicle steady when lifting from brake to throttle going uphill. Vehicle Stability Control, traction control, and four-wheel anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution keep the vehicle steady on highways and byways.

Said Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager of Toyota Division, “In 1984 the first 4Runner helped cultivate and foster the up-and-coming SUV market. When the new 4Runner launches later this fall it will continue to be a perfect fit for young, and young-at-heart, outdoor and off-road enthusiasts.”

There are more new features on the 2010 4Runner than three articles could contain. To find the right model for you, at an appropriate price point, you’ll need to visit a Toyota retailer or go online. If history is any indication, the all-new model will give chase to some very competent off-road machines, and more than a few luxury cars. With base prices starting at $29,175, competitors include the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Xterra, Hummer H3, and Chevy Tahoe.
