Ford Start Concept

The stunning red Ford Start pulled ahead of 65 concept vehicles to be named Best Concept by the AutoWeek editorial staff at the Beijing auto show this year. Small, green, smart and fun, the Ford Start won admirers for its decidedly playful take on kinetic design. More than a design exploration into the feasibility of a future small car, it previews the smallest engine yet in the growing Ford EcoBoost engine family. GM’s EN-V – Concept For Urban Travel

If you thought the Smart ForTwo was a tiny wee wheeler, I have news. At the recent Shanghai auto show, General Motors proposed a concept that will make you believe the French-built microcar is a full-size American luxo-boat by comparison. Extending its technology partnership with Segway, GM is taking small urban travel to extremes. The EN-V Concept debuted during the recent Shanghai auto show.

“EN-V reinvents the automobile by creating a new vehicle DNA through the convergence of electrification and connectivity. It provides an ideal solution for urban mobility that enables future driving to be free from petroleum and emissions, free from congestion and accidents, and more fun and fashionable than ever before,” said Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group.

The two-seat, self-balancing EN-V carries two people and can basically turn around within its own footprint. All functions are drive-by-wire with power for the vehicle coming from rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. GM claims the tiny pod can travel “at least 40 kilometers on a single charge.” It can be recharged at home or from public outlets.

Designers created three versions for different personalities named Jiao, Miao, and Xio which are translated to Price, Magic, and Laugh respectively. Wireless communications and GPS would theoretically allow the pods to move from point to point using the fastest path and to avoid accidents by knowing where all other vehicles are around them. On-board cameras and sensors enable the vehicles to be more aware of their surroundings, even stopping to avoid hitting pedestrians.

It is going to be a very long time before the EN-V is in widespread use throughout the U.S. However, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine using one to commute in busy urban environments in the mode of a neighborhood vehicle. A trip through Europe or Asia might convince you that the vehicle would be perfect for moving around crowded areas with narrow streets. The cars of the future will take many forms. We’ll have to wait and see if the EN-V’s fun shape is one of them.

2010 Ford Police Interceptor Concept

Ford revealed its all-new, purpose-built Ford Police Interceptor sedan, showcasing a car for law enforcement officials that will exceed the durability, safety, performance and fuel economy of the industry’s leading police car – the Ford Crown Victoria – while also confirming production of a Ford Police Interceptor utility vehicle. Ford, the police vehicle market leader for 15 years, specifically designed and engineered an all-new Ford Police Interceptor to handle the rigors of police work, including industry-leading powertrain, safety and technology innovations. Ford will also add a second Ford Police Interceptor to the lineup, a utility vehicle to provide customers a choice of the best vehicle to suit their needs. More details will be released in the third quarter of this year. “Police nationwide asked for a new kind of weapon in the battle for public safety, and Ford is answering the call with a purpose-built vehicle – engineered and built in America – that’s as dynamic as it is durable,” said Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas. To develop the all-new Ford Police Interceptor, Ford engineers worked hand-in-hand with Ford’s Police Advisory Board of law enforcement professionals, which provided input on key vehicle attributes such as safety, performance, durability, driver comfort and functionality. “Their feedback mattered to us,” said Scott Tobin, Ford vehicle line director for cars and crossovers. “Safety and durability were at the top of their list. So safety
