Chevy Equinox – Goes Upscale Economically

Upscale economy. It is kinda oxymoronic, but you might think of Target, Dockers, and Apple. These places and products are affordably priced, but really leave nothing on the table when compared to much more expensive choices. The 2010 Chevy Equinox also comes to mind.
Exterior styling reminds me more of an Acura MDX or Lexus RX350 than GM’s least-expensive crossover. A huge crossbar grille busts through wind and snow, chiseled bodysides are buff, and the rounded rear end looks sculpted by a team of experts. Flared wheelarches, beveled lower bodysides, and dogleg rear window give the vehicle character. It looks as though the old Equinox worked with a personal trainer before coming out of its house for spring.
The two-tone, dual cowl dash design is very similar to the larger Traverse’s and both are inspired by Chevy’s superstar, the Corvette. Our vehicle’s gray interior trim contrasted well against the black dash and door panels. You can choose heated leather seats with red stitching, but our test model came with the net-style cloth upholstery. I’m sure some kid somewhere will fall in love with the gym rat look, but most buyers will want to go for the leather and its more contemporary feel. Rear folding seats allow the cargo hold to transport almost anything while a power liftgate enables easy access to that cavern.
Besides stylish accoutrement, an Equinox is best ordered with all of its technical delights. In-dash navigation with real time traffic alerts, backing camera, XM Satellite Radio, USB input of iPODs (works brilliantly with menus that mirror your player’s), Bluetooth connectivity for cell phones, and 8 thumping Pioneer speakers will make you feel like you’re driving a Sharper Image store. Somebody will have to explain to me who actually downloads music to an in-car 40 Gig hard drive when 120 Gig iPods are dirt cheap and easily connected; it seems about as practical as a hard-wired car phone, but Chevy has one if you must. I imagine the gigastore works very well. I’m much more impressed with tilt/telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel that includes integral phone and audio controls.
You can get a V6 engine in the Equinox with enough power to blow your grandma’s wig through the rear hatch, but test drive the four-cylinder model first. The direct-injection engine makes 182 horsepower and 172 lb.-ft. of torque, connected to the front or all wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. Back in the old days, four-speed automatics could never hit the right rev range to extract reasonable oomph from a four-cylinder. Not true now ? the Equinox’ powertrain always feels spot on. Better yet, it comes with active noise cancellation technology to silence the cabin. Fuel economy ratings of 22/32-MPG city/highway will make you a believer.
Engineers put as much effort into the chassis as the powertrain. They started with a well-damped four-wheel independent suspension system, added four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, and fortified it all with traction control and electronic stability programming. Equinox is one of the most refined and nicest-driving compact crossovers available, feeling as upscale as it looks.
Everybody wants to buy the expensive stuff and shop in high-end stores, but not all of us can afford it. Some products give you all of the quality and style without the high price. You can buy a Chevy Equinox for as little as $23,185, but our well-equipped test model came to $29,075. Skip the high-priced toys and you’ll get a crossover that drives as well as much more expensive models while giving up nothing in utility and style. Competitors include the Hyundai Tucson, Ford Escape, Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V, and Kia Sorento.

Chevy Corvette Z06 – 2011 Carbon Edition
By Casey Williams
MyCarData
Closing the gap between Corvette race and road cars, Chevrolet will introduce the Z06 Carbon Limited Edition. The 500-car run will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Corvette’s first appearance in the 24 Hours of LeMans. Think of it as “Z06 meets ZR1″.
Brembo carbon ceramic brakes with dark gray calipers are taken directly from the ZR1. Black 20-spoke 19-inch front/20-inch rear wheels, Michelin PS2 tires, and carbon pattern engine cover also connect the special Z06 to Corvette’s superstar. For the first time, a Z06 will be available with Magnetic Selective Ride Control to raise comfort and handling in the real world.
“For track use, the Z06 Carbon is the best balanced Corvette yet. It combines the lightweight and naturally-aspirated Z06 engine with the road-holding and braking of the ZR1,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette Chief Engineer. “For technical tracks like Laguna Seca, the Z06 Carbon could shave up to three seconds off the Z06 lap time.”
Exterior upgrades visually distinguish the Carbon Edition from regular Z06s. Black headlamps and mirrors, ZR1-style body color spoiler, body color door handles, carbon fibre hood, black carbon fibre rockers, and front splitter raise the fear factor. Track-ready door numbers come with each car to accent the two available paint colors: Inferno Orange or Supersonic Blue.
Those who complain about Corvette interiors will be silenced. Ebony leather with blue or orange stitching distinguishes the seats while suede steering wheels, seat inserts, armrests, and doors make the car feel special. Unique steering wheel emblems, sill plates, and headrest logos tell everybody this is no normal Z06.
We’ll have to wait until later this summer to see the car in dealerships with price tags attached. Until then, start drooling for the coolest and most advanced Z06 to date.

Bucks fan sinks half court shot to win 2008 Chevy Malibu
Check us out on Twitter: twitter.com or bucks.com MILWAUKEE — We’re not sure if this one even hit the rim, but no matter how it went in, Michael Hall of East Troy, Wisconsin, will trade in his beat-up wheels for a hard earned 2008 Chevy Malibu for sinking a half court shot during halftime of the Bucks vs. Nets game Saturday night at the Bradley Center. The half-time competition has become a staple at Bucks home games throughout the years. At each Bradley Center-based contest, two random fans are selected to participate in the Chevy Super Shot 2007-2008 Midwest Airlines Skyshots Competition. Both contestants are given 24 seconds to make as many free throws as possible. The shooter with the most made free throws advances to half-court for one shot at the coveted grand prize — the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. Hall was attending his second Bucks game of the year when he was approached and asked to be a part of the contest. “I usually get to nine or ten games a year,” Hall said. “The car I own right now is pretty old and beat-up, so this is perfect.” The Chevy Super Shot 2007-2008 Midwest Airlines Competition is sponsored by Chevrolet, Midwest Airlines and the Milwaukee Bucks. Hall’s car will be presented to him at a future Bucks home game this season.
