You deleted your comments but i still got them by email. So. Where you are getting confused is, in the W engines, they use technology from the VR6 engines. So a W12 is two VR6 engines next to each other. They do this to reduce the amount of room the engine takes up, as the VR6 is a much more compact engine than a inline or V6. It is, in itself not a W engine, nor are the pistons set up like a W engine. It is just used to create W engines.
You really are not clever. The motor is called a VR6, V being the shape of the piston set up, R meaning Reihenmotor, which means row, or inline. and 6 being the amount of pistons. The motor is a very narrow angle V6, about 10-15degrees. However instead of being set up like a traditional V6, the cylinders are set up as a inline (Reihenmotor) 6. This gives the smoothness of a inline 6, while the V gives the space saving benefits of a V6. W12 is 2 V6s set up next to each other hence the W, or VV12
