JUDY GARLAND “GET HAPPY” (SUMMER STOCK, 1950)

JUDY GARLAND “GET HAPPY” Though it’s called Summer Stock, this marvelous “let’s put on a show” musical – the final one that showcased the peerless pair of Judy Garland and Gene Kelly – is a delight for all seasons. The story is simple: a homespun farm family allows a Broadway production company to rehearse its new show on their property – if the performers “pay” their way by pitching in with all the farm chores! But the pleasures are abundant: a show-stopping, all-star “Battle of the Dances” that starts out as a square dance and blossoms into a cavalcade of high-stepping dance favorites; Kelly’s marvelous song and later dance to “You, Wonderful You;” four of the most popular comedic screen actors ever: Phil Silvers, Eddie Bracken, Hans Conried and Marjorie Main; and Garland’s incomparable “Get Happy,” a smashing sequence that’s one of her peak movie moments.

    @Vengeance509 I agree that she has an extremely large fanbase that is familiar with all of her work. I’d said that most of the people I talk to only know Oz, so they aren’t aware of the extent of her talent beyond that. I wasn’t necessarily downplaying her popularity. She’s always been very popular and well-loved. My usage of the word “trend” was more in the sense of a fad. If more people spoke about her to non-fans, she’d eventually become “cool” again.

    Haha nice image of Pelosi, by the way.

    @hcvang She is indeed huge amongst gays, but she’s not just a trend to them. They’re often devoted fans of hers. I meant trend in the sense of a fad; something that wasn’t considered “cool” last week, but is now all the rage. You know, like if you wear something to school one day, and within the next month, a lot of people are wearing the same. That’s why I said, “for better or worse,” because for many, it will simply be a fad, but for some, it could become genuine interest.

    @LovePeaceNFreedom isnt she one already? a trend.

    seems to me she’s huge in gay circles…

    @LovePeaceNFreedom Of course most people know her from Oz in this synapse-challenged world; Oz is so obvious and immense. But millions still know her entire massive body of work. Biggest musical star of Hollywood’s ‘Golden Age’. She is still pretty trendy for being dead almost forty years. I mean, the Carnegie Hall album hasn’t gone out of print since 1961. It sells to this very day, this very minute.

    @XxAllieRosexX iDout that LOL

  13. LovePeaceNFreedom says:

    @hcvang Yeah, man. I just consistently throw her name out there when talking about music so that it’ll eventually get through to a few people that actually take time to check things out instead of just going by what others say. Most of the people that I talk to only know her from The Wizard of Oz, which apparently doesn’t impress them, so I talk about her other stuff in hopes that they’ll check it out. If enough of us do that, for better or worse, she’ll become a trend one day.
