The director was Peter Yates. The story was adapted for the screen by Alan Trustman and Harry Kleiner, based on the novel titled Mute Witness (1963) by Robert L. Fish (aka Robert L. Pike). Lalo Schifrin wrote the original music score, a memorable mix of jazz, brass and percussion. The movie won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing (Frank P. Keller) and was nominated for Best Sound. Writers Trustman and Kleiner won a 1969 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Motion Picture Screenplay. Bullitt is most-remembered for its central car chase scene through the streets of downtown San Francisco, one of the earliest and most influential car chase sequences in movie history.[1] The scene had Bullitt in a dark “Highland Green” 1968 Ford Mustang GT390 Fastback, chasing two hit-men in a “Tuxedo Black” 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum. (In honor of the Mustang in the film, the Ford Motor Company produced a limited edition 2001 Ford Mustang GT “Bullitt Mustang,” which took styling cues from the ’68 movie car and even mimicked its exhaust note).

Awesome movie. one of mcqueen’s greatest films. And Great Escape
McQueen + Mustang = COOL AS FUCK
Mustang – real man’s car. love American muscle cars candy paint and white walls damn! i wish i had one
the best car chase in movie history..what makes it the best it aint the chase itself but the idea that everything is real not just some fake special effects shit and Steve McQueen has some kickass driving skills
I like the moment at 1:00 where the bad driver double checks the car
. It’s like “Hm nice car…Hey WTF the cop!” ;D
GOT THAT MOTHERFUCKER!
nice mother fucker
@landart67 haha yeah, it just walked away from that mustang
after the charger side swipes the wall @ 4:28 he floors it down that hill and nails that flat part of the cross road. Bad Ass.
too bad no Chevelle/camaro was in this. then uit would have the big three in a movie!
Naturally more parts would break on the Mustang because that was a unibody with an A frame suspension. The charger was made on a full frame and can handle this type of abuse for this type of stunt.
@kzbxvz charger the charger never needed any fixing during all the jumps where as the stag had many problems with parts breaking or falling off.
@bwild61 lol they dont own Land rover or Jaguar … TATA own them since 2008
The guy in the Charger drives like my wife. She’ll sideswipe the side of the garage door.
wow…car chases have come along way since then.
Ford owns Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar , a portion of Nissan and Mazda. Now thats an American success story!
That was a Nice charger!
pity the rest of the movie is generally boring!
A Ford Mustang GT 390 vs a Dodge Charger who’s the winner
))
A Ford Mustang GT 380 vs a Dodge Charger who’s the winner
))
That sounds pretty good, actually, or they could use the new Shelby GT500. But the other car would have to be a baddie car. AND would they use Keanu Reeves as Bullitt?
the cadillac CTS V coupe concept vs a camaro/mustang/challenger would make a good remake
i know i’ll get a lot of bad comments for this…. but the facts is that dodge rules while ford droles!!!! Long live MOPAR!!! i know more people like ford but compare the 2 to the ratio of people with higher than a ged.
Thats mustang stuck to the damn road like superglue, lots of suspension work.
why does that matter? he also rescued 4 people in his marine squad from a tank that was going through the ice…life is life who cares what he did to get by. he was gang raped and molested at a young age continuing to have homosexual relationship at a later age is a typical result….he also fucked a lot of hot ass female actresses like marilyn monroe….
