Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept
Porsche has unveiled a surprise concept car, the 918 Spyder, on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show during a special pre-show event. Introduced by President and CEO of Porsche AG, Michael Macht, the mid-engined sports car takes the “ecology vs. performance” issue a few notches up. Described as a “Super-Sports” car, the 918 Spyder is a low emissions plug-in hybrid with a split personality. On the ecological side it is capable of 3.0 litres/100 kilometers (94 mpg imp / 78 mpg US) with just 70 grams of CO2 emissions per kilometer. However, on the performance side, it’s driven by a V8 producing more than 368 kw (500 PS / 493 hp) plus three electric motors putting out 160 kw (218 PS / 215 hp). That gives the two-seater a combined power output of 528 kw (718 PS / 708 hp) resulting in a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 3.2 seconds, top speed of 320 km/h (198 mph), and a lap time on the Nurburgring Nordschleife in less than 7:30 minutes, which is faster than the Porsche Carrera GT. The 918 Spyder features a liquid cooled lithium-ion battery, brake energy regeneration, push-to-pass “E-Boost” button for sudden overtaking maneuvers, and four driving modes. They are: E-Drive mode for electric only powered driving; Hybrid mode, which uses both the electric motors and the V8 engine relative to driving conditions; Sport Hybrid mode uses both drive systems, but with the focus on performance; and Race Hybrid mode for hardcore performance running at the limit. “Power is transmitted to the wheels …

The stats are a bit iffy.. faster than a carrera?
but still, this car looks sexy:D
“a very low power to weight ratio” — last time I checked my 2nd grade math textbook, that’s a BAD thing.
The most stunning car ever. I will definately put an order down next year if it ever gets into production. Hopefully by that time my investment will have paid dividends. I hope to turn 1mill into 10m within 2 years. hehe. Go fiss slovenia
@DRFTmonkeh
You missing my point~
My point is Porsche 918 is worth too $400k when I compare with LFA’s MSRP!!!
Also I’m sure porsche 918 will be available in limited numbers~
few are worse, at least other companies build a few practical models for working people
am i the only one who sees the irony in a hybrid sports car? does performance actually benefit from the hybrid system or does the added weight exceed that? and is this another one of those hybrids that, like the prius, takes a harder toll on the environment just to manufacture than it could ever make up for in low emissions? a hybrid system on a supercar seems a bit pointless to me unless theres some performance benefit i dont know about
lol 11-99. my uncle paid a pretty penny to get that stupid license plate
dude calm down its just a commercial. people want money thats how its always been.. no other large automotive company is any better.
LF-A isn’t reasonable. toyota built the LF-A to prove that it could build a competitive supercar, not particularly to attract customers. this is also why they only built 500 of them
Damn i wish i had the voice of the narrator!!! he’s got his fact straight
After talking on this thread for several days now, you’re the only person who has even had anything relevant to say about the topic. Everyone else’s logic engines are broken.
It’s not a valid argument method to tell someone else to do the research. OBVIOUSLY I know what I’m talking about. If you have information to the contrary, it’s your job to show me.
Nothing you’ve said discounts my contention that this car is idiotic.
It’s weird your message was marked as spam. Anyway, dude, come on, be serious. The “fact” that I hadn’t “done my research on” was that a certain guy made a serial hybrid 111 years ago. THAT is the fact that you are saying shows that I haven’t done my research. One small fact that is irrelevant. You can post links (just describe the link rather than quoting it, I can put it together). Show me one that verifies serials are more expensive and less efficient. . . .

It means you should do more research! There are plenty of sources available on the net that argue against series-hybrid as well as sources that are FOR series-hybrids. Too bad I can’t post links, but series-hybrids aren’t without flaws. At any rate, I’m sure the inventors of series-hybrids must have taken into consideration using that kind of dtrain but decided against it. If they could make 918 more fuel efficient and have better performance, they would for the sake of destroying competition.
if porsche is being cynical, then what does that make tesla motors?
I think actually this interesting fact entirely verifies my contention regarding this 918: it is a cynical attempt to make dumb rich people think they are being “green” while still for some unknown reason jerking off their oil company masters. The series hybrid has been setting speed records for 111 years. So what’s Porsche do? Uninvent the winner by putting an electric motor in a V8.
That’s awesome! I didn’t know that! As for doing research, I just did! You told me about it!
“Ferdinand Porsche used this set up in the early 20th century in racing cars, effectively inventing the series-hybrid arrangement. Porsche named the system, System Mixt. A wheel hub motor arrangement, with a motor in each of the two front wheels was used, setting speed records.”
“The Lohner-Porsche Mixte Hybrid was the first hybrid vehicle developed in 1899 by Ferdinand Porsche. It was a series hybrid using electric motors mounted in each wheel hub powered by electricity delivered from both batteries and a small generator.” Look it up. Yes it IS old technology. Do some research man.
GUYS~
Lexus LFA is $375,000~
Porsche 918 is futuristic concept but realistic Super car~ compare the specs and performance with any super car in the current market either upcoming super car. $400,000 is reasonable cost if LFA is $375,000.
@shaviw
My bad~
it’s 25km with battery power~
So what? still the best so far~
AND what in the world are you talking about that Porsche invented serial hybrids?!?!?! Is that really what you meant? The diesel train engines and ocean liners we’ve been using for at least the last 60 years, Porsche invented those did they? Serial hybrid is OLD technology.
And again, if we’re talking about a $400K car, who cares if a serial hybrid is 20%-30% less efficient? (Again completely untrue. The whole advantage of a serial is that the gas motor can be tuned to run at one speed, with huge efficiency savings over one that has to power the wheels, through multiple gears, etc.)
Secondly, with a serial hybrid YOU WOULD TAKE OUT THE V8! Even if all your premises about serial hybrids were true, which their not, it couldn’t possibly be that much more expensive than the V8.
Then you say this car will go “fast enough”–if performance ISN’T an issue, then why the stupid V8?!?!?!
Again, we’re talking about a car where the whole point is that money is no object, now your new argument is a serial hybrid would be too expensive?! (Which by the way isn’t true–serial hybrids are VERY simple–that’s one of their main advantages. Parallels are insane complicated because of the transmission having to negotiate between two drive trains etc. But again, why are you even talking about cost for a $400K car?
